We are raising funds to equip our vessel with a pair of underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), equipped with a variety of sensors to support data acquisition and sample collection from the surface to depths of up-to 1,000 meters, broaching the ocean’s Twilight Zone, and capable of operating and navigating safely in crystal clear waters or blackout conditions.
Spearheaded by team member Colin Bettis, an aerospace engineer and member of The Explorers Club, these systems will play a pivotal role in providing comprehensive support to all aspects of our expedition, from ocean research to documentary filmmaking, education outreach, vessel safety inspection, as well as support to, and safety monitoring of, scuba diving research crew members in the water.
Designed with operations in the Twilight Zone in mind, an environment distinguished by its nearly constant darkness and a temperature of approximately 4 °C (39 °F), the ROVs will be equipped with cutting-edge 4K camera systems, navigation lights and sensors, as well as a variety of tools allowing our researchers to collect the requisite data in such conditions and return safely to the surface.
This strategic combination of capabilities not only empowers scientific investigations by capturing high-resolution imagery, but also serves the dual purpose of enhancing the visual production quality for the documentary and education outreach teams. The synchronized use of these advanced technologies underscores the team's commitment to pushing the boundaries of exploration and storytelling in the ocean’s depths.
Our ROV program serves a dual purpose. In 2021, near Thamesford, Ontario, our Captain Red suffered a traumatic brain injury from a unprovoked hammer attack by a mentally disturbed farmer, which led to daily migraines and ended his diving career. As a result, ROVs have become his primary means of exploring and engaging with the marine environment.
The Expedition Audacity Scuba Program offers a comprehensive and immersive experience for individuals passionate about underwater exploration. Aligned with the overarching mission of Expedition Audacity, this scuba initiative aims to integrate the excitement of scuba diving with scientific research, fostering a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems and their conservation needs.
Participants in the scuba program will undergo rigorous training and certification under the guidance of certified scuba instructors. The program accommodates both beginners and advanced divers, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all. Emphasis is placed on adhering to strict safety protocols and procedures to enhance the overall diving experience.
One unique aspect of the Scuba Program is its integration into scientific research activities. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on data collection, contributing directly to marine research initiatives. The program encourages exploration of unique underwater environments, offering divers a chance to witness and document marine life in its natural habitat.
State-of-the-art scuba gear is provided to participants, accompanied by training on advanced underwater technologies. The program introduces participants to scientific instruments used in data collection, providing them with a holistic understanding of the tools employed in marine research.
Environmental conservation is a core focus of the Scuba Program, promoting responsible and sustainable diving practices. Participants will actively take part in coral reef restoration projects and engage in marine conservation initiatives, aligning with Expedition Audacity's commitment to protecting the world's oceans.
Educational outreach is another vital component, with collaboration opportunities with educational institutions and the development of outreach programs for local communities. The Scuba Program aims to document and share underwater discoveries, contributing to the broader understanding of marine environments.
The program also seeks to build a community of divers within Expedition Audacity, fostering networking opportunities and encouraging lifelong learning and exploration. A dedicated Scuba Club will be formed, offering exclusive events and expeditions for its members, creating a supportive and dynamic space for continued skill enhancement and shared passion for ocean exploration. Through the Expedition Audacity Scuba Program, participants not only delve into the wonders of the underwater world but also contribute meaningfully to marine research and conservation efforts.
