Expedition Luminescence is an enthralling Youth Program within the Scientific Research and Exploration initiatives of Expedition Audacity. Seamlessly integrating educational outreach with the craft of youth-centered documentary production, this initiative provides a distinctive and immersive experience. Tailored to captivate young minds, it actively involves participants in scientific exploration through research endeavors, nurturing a fervor for discovery and the acquisition of knowledge.
The three main goals of the Education & Outreach [E&O] team are to ‘share, collaborate, and document’ the scientific, cultural, and nautical explorations of Expedition Luminescence. Tapping into all aspects of the expedition and its endeavors, the E&O team will produce a full STEAM+ curriculum to share with students around the world.
The E&O team will work collaboratively with local communities, on-board professionals, and researchers to build equitable education spaces that celebrate individual voices, share information responsibly, and develop STEAM+ resources in the service life-long learning.
Expedition Luminescence innovates how scientific expeditions connect with student populations and raises the standard for the dissemination of primary source content. The Expedition presents an unparalleled opportunity to invite students into a dynamic world of science and inspire the next generation of curious young explorers worldwide.
Expedition Luminescence seeks to involve classrooms from all types of education systems, worldwide. The program will be primarily led in English, but will contain many multilingual translations and outlets for participation, reflective of the language abilities of our crew and port stops for that season.
Programming for ‘Expedition 1’ will take place over the Winter and Spring [January, 2025 - June, 2025], but participation is open to all classroom types: homeschool, full day, summer programming, Out-of-school-time, etc. The programming structure is dynamic, meant to be adjustable for a diversity of classroom needs and schedules.
Program details and structures are listed below. If there are any arrangements that would better support your classroom learning, we would be delighted to work towards accommodations. Please reach out to our education team to discuss the details:
Participation Levels: There are two tiers of classroom/educator participation on each season of Expedition Audacity, and they are defined by their levels of live participation: The EA Cohort and Lumi Learners.
Core Curriculum: The core curriculum of E&O on the Expedition will consist of six main fields of interest. All videos, articles, resources, and projects will be tagged under one or more of these categories:
Program Schedule: content from the E&O team will be sent-out weekly, alongside the engagement of long-running projects/activities as well as one-off engagements.
The main educator team will consist of an on-board and on-land coordinator to facilitate student and educator connection to the expedition and programmatic events. On-board, the E&O coordinator is a lifetime educator, explorer and artist. Alongside her, the Expedition crew will also serve as education and information sources for our students. The team is loaded with dedicated researchers, master captains and crews, artists, chefs, environmentalists, and engineers who have years of training, as well as heightened interest and enthusiasm for their subjects. The whole team is excited to share and interact with your classroom!
Through generous donations from our partners, and in alignment with the programmatic pillar to center equitable access and opportunity in STEAM, no classroom will incur any cost to participate.
Expedition Luminescence wishes to accommodate all classrooms and learning styles, within our capacity. If you or your classroom has a specific need or interest, please reach out to our team so we can discuss accommodations:
In celebration of the diversity of our cohort community, Expedition team, and travel plans, language and culture will always be a highlight of the curriculum. For “Expedition 1”, crew members who are fluent in Bengali, Danish, Dutch, French, Greek, Hindi, and two fluent in Spanish (Latin America), and full translations of the curriculum will be available to classrooms upon request.
If you are interested in nominating a classroom or getting involved yourself, please reach out to our education team today! EL Cohort classroom spots are limited, so email our team to discuss what type of participation is right for your students.
